When it comes to PC Gaming there are two things that every gamer must have, that is a good gaming keyboard and gaming mouse. Recently I got my hands on the Logitech G402 Hyperion Fury, a gaming mouse that is aimed squarely at the mid-range market. After putting the G402 through its paces it’s very clear that this gaming mouse offers more than enough for the casual gamer right through to the serious gamer.
Designwise the G402 looks the part as a serious piece of gaming kit. The G402 is made of plastic with a matte black finish that looks great with an angular design and is well complimented by the glowing Blue “G” on the mouse. The thumb fits comfortably into the groove on the right hand side and the pinky also gets a comfortable little crevice to rest in. All up there are 8 programmable buttons that are well positioned, making the switch the press a different button both fluid and comfortabe. The G402 doesn’t allow weight to be shifted but the 108 grams that the G402 carries is well apportioned, making sliding the mouse around a breeze.
When it comes to tracking the G402 boasts a 32-bit ARM porcessor and the ability to track up to around 500ips. Unless you are Superman then it won’t matter how fast you move the mouse the G402 will be able to keep up with every movement you make. Coupled with the extremely fast tracking is the ability to adjust the DPI (up to 4,000) in-game on the fly. For anyone right into their first person shooters, this means that you can lower the DPI to get improved accuracy for something like sniping, increase it if you become engaged in an intense fire fight and then increase it even more to make a run for it if the action gets a little too intense.
As mentioned above, there are 8 programmable buttons on the G402. The mouse supports plug and play so as soon as you plug in the USB cable you get basic functionality. Gamers who are running windows are able to download the Logitech Gaming Software which allows the buttons to be fully customised. Logitech Gaming Software allows for custom macros, multi keystrokes, LED changes and the all important dpi settings. I love the ability to customise buttons, I like to have as many commands as possible on the mouse rather than the keyboard so having those 8 buttons available on the G402 is a godsend. Sure you can’t go the advanced level of customisation like sensor alignment or acceleration modifications but for a mid-range mouse the G402 has more than enough customisation to keep most gamers happy. The big tick is that Logitech Gaming Software makes the customisation dead simple and is something that some other manufacturers should look at in order to simplify the customisation process.
With a price tag of $79.90NZ the G402 represents excellent value for money. The 32 bit ARM processor and seriously powerful sensor make the G402 stand out in the mid-range gaming mouse market. The level of customisation available on the 8 programmable buttons is more than enough for the average gamer and is just about the perfect ratio of buttons for FPS fans. If you are in the market for a reasonably priced gaming mouse the delivers top quality performance then it is hard to look past the G402.{:}
