PUBG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, or PUBG, became a worldwide phenomenon as it hit early access on Steam with its popularisation of the Battle Royale genre. Sure, it has existed before, and will likely be infused into many games to come, but PUBG brought the mode to many people’s attention including myself. Since the release, there have been various ways to hack the game to level up without the hard work! If you’re looking for a pubg hack, you’ll need to do your research.

Known for being rough around the edges, but improving, many were surprised it was going to come to the Xbox One in the Early Access program. This is because as console gamers, we aren’t always used to how rough an Early Access title can be.

But in its early access state, with constant upgrades over the last couple of months, is it worth the 40 bucks?

What is PUBG?

If you don’t know what PUBG is, I will quickly outline what occurs in a game.

You are loaded into a lobby island. Where you can run around and shoot each other while the game fills up with it 99 other players. Doing so is a good way to warm up to the controls, shoot others with immunity, and have some silly fun.

Once the lobby is full, the game cuts away to a plane flying over an island. This is where you choose where to jump out, and parachute to the ground.

In the plane you see no other players, but once you jump they appear, sky diving a long side you or in the distance.

Once you land, the game is on.

You need to find weapons, cars, or shelter, and your job is to be the last person standing. Once you die, you are out of the game.

Weapons and cars are most commonly found in high density areas with a lot of buildings or houses, and this is where most people try to land, and where the early onslaughts take place. Landing in a less dense area will avoid this high action moment of the game, but may leave you unarmed when someone finds you.

Because the games island is so large, every few minutes it restricts the play area, and finding yourself outside of that area will slowly kill you, meaning the longer the game goes to, as there are less places there are to hide.

So now that we know what the game is and how it works, it’s time to look at the good, the bad, and the ugly. In reverse order, because.

The Ugly

There is one thing about this game that is ugly, and that’s the game. It’s an average looking title, that would underwhelm anyone who only spends their time playing polished triple-A experiences like Uncharted.

The map is big and detailed, and it renders a lot of interesting things like buildings, trees, and terrains. But rough around the edges would be a polite way to explain away every edge being infected with jaggies.

The Bad

Would you like some game with your bugs?

PUBG is an absolute buggy mess. Framerate issues, Rubber banding, picking up weapons that disappear, if you can name it, it’s probably happened to someone in PUBG.

Take this anecdote I experienced recently.

I joined a match, then the whole game crashes. I relaunch PUBG and asks me if I want to join the game again. I do so and find myself on the lobby island. Exploring, I notice the number of players reducing. I track down a gun, shoot someone a few times, and they die. The game had started. After a small fight with the players on this island I find myself alone, then the game tells me it is reducing the play area. As it reduces, and I start taking damage. I try swimming to the other island, and the game over screen appears, and anywhere it would have stats, like my placing or kills for example, it has the word failed.

This is the extreme of bad examples I had, but the game is in Game Preview and its broken, so expect this.

The Good

I can’t stress enough how much fun I have playing this game.

PUBG is a buggy mess, but the game breaking bugs are rare, they are usually silly quirks like not picking up a gun, or rubber banding when you and another person are running in circles trying to shoot each other.

These bugs are annoying, and if it was a $120 game on its release date it would be unacceptable. But that’s not what PUBG is, it’s a $40 game that says it’s broken from the get go. For $40 and knowing this, these bugs add to its charm.

It’s a game the builds tension, especially as it reduces the playing area, and you have no idea if you are in or out of the news boundaries. Then if you’ve seen no others, to come face to face with someone, and for bugs to get in the way in a 1 v 1 fight, it’s funny.

That’s the crux of whether you’ll enjoy PUBG right now. If you can look at the above scenario and laugh, take a dive, it’s worth its price of entry. If you can’t help but get angry when the game is unfair, or something out of your control gets in the way, then you need to wait for release as this will be a broken game for a while yet. Controllers will be broken.
