For any PC gamers a good keyboard is a must and the pinnacle is of course a Mechanical Keyboard. Logitech are well known for their top quality PC peripherals and their gaming range is no exception. The G910 Orion Spark is Logitech’s latest gaming keyboard featuring all new Romer-G switches, marking a move away from Cherry MX. The G910 is yet another high quality product from Logitech, one that further cements them as a premier manufacturer of gaming keyboards.
From the moment you open the box the G910 catches the eye. It is a hulking beast of a keyboard that takes up plenty of desk space and offers a plethora of keys in addition to the stock standard keys found on any QWERTY keyboard. Alongside the QWERTY keyboard is a 10 key numberpad, built in media controls and completely customisable macro buttons. The keys feature the all important mechanical switches and come with a bunch of programmable actions, all up there are 27 programmable keys on offer.
Logitech have gone with a very unique key design. Knowing that the majority of gamers use the left hand to navigate the keyboard, the keys have been designed to favour the left hand. The multi-facet bucket like design of the keys is more greatly emphasised on the left hand side with it fading out as you move further right on the keyboard. The core WASD keys are the most emphasised keys on the keyboard and protrude more than any other, for gaming this is perfect because it’s easier than ever to find your way back to those core keys should you stray elsewhere on the keyboard. Fingers rest nicely within the keys too which is something I appreciate. On standard keyboards I find myself accidentally pressing the wrong button in the heat of the moment as I try to get down to another key (Caps Lock is usually my biggest culprit). With the G910’s unique key design I found this complaint of mine rarely occurred and I found the right keys easily and more importantly, stayed on them too! Typing on the keyboard does take some getting used to due to the way the keyboard favours keys on the left but after a while you get used to it and you’ll be back to touch-typing in no time at all.
The key switches themselves move away from the ever popular Cherry MX switches in favour of Omron’s Romer-G switches. Aural and Tactile feedback is within cooee of other mechanical keyboards however the design is fundamentally different. Without digging too deep into it the result is key switches that hold the LED light better and offer a more evenly distributed amount of force across the keys.
Logitech Gaming Software is what powers this brute of a keyboard and is your one-stop shop for enhancing your gaming experience. Logitech Gaming Software is the place you’ll go to program keys and set up those killer macros. The RGB backlighting looks very sexy and can even be customised through the Gaming Software. Colour can be adjusted, light patterns changed, heck, you can even assign a string of commands to a single button!
Logitech have also built a nifty little phone dock into the top of the keyboard. It won’t charge your phone unfortunately but it does have some practical use. Download the Logitech Arx Control App and you’ll find your phone provided some very useful in game stats without the need to switch out of the game. You’ll be able to see CPU %, key analytics, temperature to name just a few. All of this information on your phone means you can stay in the game for longer and get all of the pertinent information delivered right there in front of you.
When using a product like the G910 it pays to remember that this is first and foremost, a gaming keyboard. Yes it can be used for normal day to day work and typing but the core experience is designed to make life easier for gamers. The key design is a prime example, focusing on emphasising the most prominent keys that gamers use and tapering off for the less used keys. With 27 customisable keys on offer that also allow string commands there is a lot a power at the fingertips of gamers on the G910. Even after prolonged gameplay my fingers were comfortable on the keys and didn’t suffer from the dreaded cramping that some other keyboards can cause. The G910 is a serious piece of gaming kit and the $299NZ pricetag reflects that. If you want a keyboard that is going to deliver the best possible gaming experience then take a good hard look at the G910 Orion Spark because it packs a powerful punch and rewards you for your investment.{:}
