]]>Since I reviewed the Fitbit Sense I have had it attached to my wrist basically ever since. It is an absolutely fantastic watch with some extraordinary features and a good battery life. The only issue is that $450 is a lot of money to spend on a watch. Even if that watch is filled to the brim with features.
If only there was another watch with a lot of these premium features but with a lower price tag. Oh hello Fitbit Charge 5, when did you walk in the room?
The first question will be your personal style. I definitely like the chunkiness of the Fitbit Sense, it has that classic Smart Watch style. Though it is hard to deny that the sleek look of the Charge isn’t appealing. The smooth line as your eyes follow the band to the watch back to the band is pretty awesome.
This watch will appeal to different people in different ways and I can’t tell you your style is wrong. I mean I am a dad rocking the sneans combo with a Last of Us T-Shirt so who am I to judge? The watch’s interface is built beautifully to use within limited space so have no fear, the loss of real estate isn’t lost when using the device.
If my stubby fingers can use it, then you’ll be sweet.
Before I tested out the Fitbit Sense I was used to terrible smartwatch battery life, examples being the Oppo I got a day out of and the Samsung Galaxy watch I could get two days out of (sometimes).I didn’t know how good life can be with a watch that doesn’t need to be charged every night and now I can’t turn back.
The Charge 5 doesn’t have the massive battery life of the Sense, but I easily got between four and seven days out of a full charge. This is pretty impressive when you think about how little the device is, and charging once a week or so is pretty damn reasonable.
Of course it retains one of those useful features that I loved when using the Sense. When the battery level dropped low I got an email and a notification on the app on my phone saying to charge it. When you get this alert, you still have at least a day left of battery life. This is bloody brilliant because you won’t be caught out with it dying halfway through a workout.
Well unless you ignore it. If this is the case then stop ignoring your emails, your grandma is getting worried.
With previously used watches the steps were all over the place, with many days they reckoned I walked 10 steps. Even at my laziest I can walk from the bed to the couch which is more than 10 steps. This kind of tracking is where the Fitbit is king in the industry. The Charge 5 continues to make this a part of your life.
With a sedentary job that has me at a desk for hours on end, those prompts to get moving are actually kind of useful too.
The one omission is it doesn’t have an altimeter so it doesn’t pick up how many floors you have walked up. Not the biggest deal, but a thing if that is important to you.
OK maybe not a stress free life, but you can see how stressed you are.
What is impressive is the premium features slipped into this watch. Things like the NZ ECG app which first featured on the Sense is included here. You can also do things like the EDA scan which checks the electrical charges in your skin to tell if you are stressed.
To do this you put your hand over the watch for a minute and you close your eyes and chill for two minutes. The process of doing this for a test tends to wind up creating my most stress free moments. This is because I try to regulate my breathing and before I know it, I am ready to get back to being stressed at work.
What is cool is that it picks up a lot of info throughout the day and night. It generates scores based on how well you slept including in the different states. With a six month old in the house who hates sleep it is anyone’s guess on how accurate it is. I know that the Sense did a good job of picking up when I had a shit night’s sleep but when all your sleep sucks it’s hard to tell a better one from a worse one.
It wasn’t always perfect but it was pretty good. I then combined info including your exercise and heart rate to give you a health score for the day. This cool feature has it balancing multiple important aspects to live a balanced life.
The Fitbit Charge 5 is an excellent watch for the price. Some premium features make this one a no brainer for someone looking in that price bracket. At $299 it has a great battery life, a heap of cool measurements, and is super comfy to wear. It doesn’t let you control your music could be a minor annoyance. Though I image most do that with their earbuds now anyway. There are some cool features behind the Fitbit Premium paywall like the Daily Readiness score too, but these aren’t essential.
On the whole when it comes to features for money, you would be hard pressed to find a better option.

Fitbit and Diabetes have worked together to raise money for diabetes. There is still time to sign up, get the challenge steps in and encourage participants to explore their backyard and give some of the beautiful hikes and walks we have in our regions a go!
To mark Diabetes Action Month, Diabetes NZ and Fitbit are launching the first ever ‘Step up 250K Challenge’ to get Kiwis fit, active, and to fundraise for Diabetes NZ. People are being asked to take 250,000 steps in November, or about 8,300 steps a day – a great goal for those who’ve had their exercise routines disrupted by lockdown. The initiative aims to raise funds and promote healthy lifestyle habits, which have a positive effect on the prevention and management of diabetes.
The lives of 1 million Kiwis are impacted by diabetes; almost 280,000 Kiwis have diabetes and a further 100,000 people are predicted to have pre-diabetes. It’s a serious and life threatening condition which is often misunderstood, and the high number of people affected means the personal and social costs are enormous.
Diabetes NZ is asking Kiwis to support the initiative by joining the challenge. You can get fit, stay strong and raise funds for those whose lives are impacted by this debilitating disease. To take part, all people need is a Fitbit, or the free Fitbit app on your mobile phone, or a pedometer or step tracker. There’s no minimum amount to fundraise, and every little bit helps.
Chief Executive Officer for Diabetes NZ Heather Verry says, “Our mission is to reduce diabetes and empower those affected by the disease to lead healthy active lives, we’d love everyone who is able to, to take part in the challenge and step up with friends, family and whanau over the month of November.”
Fitbit brand ambassador Adam Blair is taking part in the challenge too. He said “I am really looking forward to the challenge as it is a fun reason to stay motivated, especially during lockdown! Also it is a great way for me to keep fit.”

]]>Fitbit continues to build and maintain relationship in the health and fitness space. One of the maintained 5 year relationships has been announced.
Fitbit and Diabetes New Zealand today announced an extension to their multi-year partnership. As a key partner to Diabetes NZ, Fitbit will continue to work with the organisation to drive awareness among Kiwis of how healthy lifestyle habits can help play a critical role in the prevention of type 2 diabetes and the management of all types of diabetes. In New Zealand, close to five percent of the population has been diagnosed with diabetes. This is predominantly type 2 diabetes according to the 2020 Social and Economic Cost of Type 2 Diabetes Report.
According to the report, Type 2 diabetes is increasingly being diagnosed in young people and is related to obesity. Predictions suggest people with type 2 diabetes in New Zealand will increase by 70-90 percent within 20 years. This is unless urgent action is taken. This suggests that a focus on prevention is needed to manage New Zealand’s fastest growing health crisis. Outside of the global pandemic of course.
An achievement of longstanding partnership is the annual Fitbit MoveMeant Challenge. The marquee event has seen influential Kiwis step up to the challenge, by participating in two weeks of healthy competition aiming to achieve the highest step count, all to raise awareness and funds for Diabetes NZ. Over the past five years the challenge has raised upwards of NZ$263,000 for the cause. Building on the success of previous years, the next Fitbit MoveMeant Challenge will kick off in March 2022.
The last MoveMeant Challenge in March 2020 saw participants enter a Level 4 lockdown on Day 1 of the challenge. Several high-profile participants kept up their steps taking part in socially distanced daily walks. These included household names such as Adam Blair, Erin Simpson and the late Sir Eion Edgar. They did this to raise awareness for the Diabetes cause.
Heather Verry, Chief Executive at Diabetes NZ, said, “We know a person’s risk of progressing from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes can be roughly halved if they exercised more and take steps toward leading a healthy lifestyle, and that these changes can also help with the management of diabetes. Wearable brands, like Fitbit, can play an important role to actively encourage Kiwis to make that change.”
Steve Morley, Director of Fitbit Health Solutions International and APAC for Fitbit at Google, said, “While the pandemic has clearly been top of mind for many of us, diabetes remains one of the most significant health issues that Asia and New Zealand face today, with an estimated 227 million people living with type II diabetes, half of which go undiagnosed. Wearables can help promote the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits, which in turn can have a positive effect on the prevention and management of type II diabetes.”

]]>It is only 4 days until Father’s Day and given the last fortnight it is totally reasonable if you forgot.
But it isn’t too late to get that present shipped directly to Dad or the father figure in your life.
If you aren’t confident in the couriers due to their increased workload then maybe some of the digital goodies or subs at the bottom may cut the mustard.
Or just make them a card or give them a call. It is the thought that counts.
Brian reviewed the Oppo Find X3 Lite and determined “Overall, the Oppo Find X3 Lite is a $1200 phone in a $799 package”.
If $800 isn’t too steep for Fathers Day and Dad needs a new phone then we have an answer. This glorious beast.
When Blair reviewed the Fitbit Sense he was blown away at how much of a premium bit of technology this was. It was definitely not just a fitness tracker, but a means to get some relaxation and a great bit of tech. If your father figure likes tech then you can’t go wrong with the Sense.
On the flip side if you father figure likes tech but wants to look a little fancier, then how about a look at the Fitbit Luxe? Hannah reviewed it and found that while it doesn’t have all the tech and gadgets, it is a great fitness tracker that looks amazing too.
No matter what your Dad likes, Fitbit wants an option available.
Maybe your Dad needs a new headset.
Well Blair checked out the Astro A50 Wireless Headset on Xbox Series X and the cheaper HyperX Cloud Stinger Core Wireless Gaming Headset For PlayStation.
Both he deemed were great headsets for the price.
The Astro A50 Wireless Headset is available for PlayStation as well and it blew Blair away. The quality of the sound, battery life, and comfort were all excellent. They of course come with a $500 price tag, so you really get what you pay for here.
For a lot of people $500 is way too much for a headset. Hell for some people $500 is too much for rent, but we won’t go down that rabbit hole here. I am trying to convince you buying stuff is cool.
So for the more budget conscious gamer a cheaper headset might be needed. If your Dad has a PS5 then the $170 HyperX Cloud Stinger Core Wireless Gaming Headset For PlayStation may be what the doctor ordered.
Blair reviewed and was blown away at the quality and comfort given the price. It also looks pretty cool next to the PS5 and DualSense.
Does your father figure work from home? Maybe he is just a PC gamer with an old mouse? Either way we checked out a couple of amazing mice this year.
For the all frills approach there is the Steelseries Prime Wireless Mouse. Blair reviewed this and couldn’t believe how well this mouse performed. That and a rechargeable battery with a long battery life makes it a banger. But it does rock a $250 price tag.
If that is too high of a price tag, then the HyperX Pulsefire Haste cabled mouse might be what the doctor ordered. With its hex design it is super light and can look super colorful. Blair was very impressed given its under $100 price tag.
There is a bunch of subscription services with a wide selection of TV shows and Movies. But what if your father or father figure has a very specific taste.
Well if they like British mystery, drama and comedy then Acorn TV might make them very happy. If Horror is their jam then Shudder could be exactly what the doctor ordered.
These have monthly and annual pricing depending on your budget. Monthly subscriptions are $7.99/month or take the annual membership option of $79.99.
If my son or wife are reading this, no thanks to Shudder. The logo scares this wuss enough…
If your Dad is a Switch gamer then Bronwyn was impressed with Mario Golf: Super Rush. This would allow playing with the whole family, or on his own in the basement. Whatever your father needs this fathers day this should do it.
If you are after an anime style action title then Blair was blown away by Scarlet Nexus. This one you could get your dad on PC, Xbox, or PlayStation.
This would be the perfect game for your father figure to melt into on the couch while you make them their breakfast, lunch, and tea. Or maybe just the game and they cook. Your call.
If Dad is gaming on a Xbox but for some reason doesn’t have Game Pass, then this is a no brainer. An absurd number of games available to play on the fly with titles changing on the regular.
And if he is just a PC gamer you can pick up Xbox Game Pass for PC. Or Game Pass Ultimate covers him on both machines.
What do you get a dad with all the latest games and toys? How about a new game so he can have it day one.
Is Dad into sports games? Well NBA 2K22 will be releasing on September 10 so only a few days after Fathers Day. If you nab some awesome pre-order bonuses he might be extra excited.
Maybe an adventure is what he needs he wants to put his PS5 to full use. Then maybe Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a nagical world he can escape to.
Kena Bridge of Spirits launches on the 21st to PS5 so a slightly longer wait for Dad. It does like it is worth waiting for.
Obviously with pre-orders you are taking the gamble as you don’t know their quality yet. But maybe something nice shiny and new is what Dad needs. And he can’t tell you the game sucks if it is a gift anyway.

]]>Technology – but make it fashion
The post Fitbit Luxe review appeared first on 8-Bit Island.
]]>The fashion industry has long understood that watches serve the dual purpose of time-telling and decoration. From Roger Federer’s Rolex, to every girl in primary-school wearing a Casio Baby-G except me, what you wear on your wrist makes statement.
Up until now, the Fitbit fashion statement has been “Hello, I’m health conscious”. Not the worst statement to be making, but sometimes you want to present an image that’s less step-count orientated.
And that’s where the Luxe comes in – the newest fitness and wellness tracker from Fitbit.
The most immediately obvious way the Fitbit Luxe differentiates itself from other Fitbits is its slime visual design. It gives it a look closer to that of a bracelet than other models. Any product that calls itself “chic” in its promotional material immediately makes me suspicious, but against the odds, Luxe gets away with it. Everything from its golden trim to its elegant curves seductively whispers “technology – but make it fashion”.
Admittedly, the starter beige silicon strap when paired with the gold plating makes me feel like a like I married rich and spend my days doing Pilates (sounds like the life to be honest). Happily, there are other easily interchangeable straps on the market if your tastes require something more edgy.
I especially appreciate that the heart rate monitor doesn’t jut out and into the skin, as some of the previous Fitbits did. It means I can monitor my bpm without having the physical proof indented into my wrist.
Surprisingly for such a small device, the Luxe packs in most of the functions Fitbits are famed for. The Fitbit Luxe tracks your calories, your sleep quality, your heart rate, your blood oxygen, and stress levels. A few swipes across the screen reveals the Fitbit Luxe’s other features, such as phone notifications, a timer, an alarm, and a workout app.
One thing the Fitbit Luxe does lack is an inbuilt GPS function: the Luxe piggybacks off your phone GPS. I guess something had to give to get that slim.
There’s also a relaxation feature, which works by guiding your breathing. My heart rate increased after using it, which I’m pretty sure means it didn’t work, but that could just be because I wanted to perform the exercise perfectly and ending up stressing myself out instead.
Fitbit Luxe has a respectable battery life, too. Like an office worker that has managed to achieve a work-life balance, the Fitbit Luxe has a 5-day battery life before it needs charging.
Oh yeah, and it does a good job of tracking your steps.
The Fitbit Luxe’s slight frame is both its best point and its worst point. While the slim look is elegant, a smaller screen is still … a smaller screen. Which means, smaller text. Seriously, this text is tiny.
The small screen meant that the Fitbit Luxe did not become my first screen of choice for many of the apps on offer. For tasks like using the alarm and timer, I still instinctively prefer the larger screen provided by my mobile phone.
However, for many this will be a small sacrifice to make to avoid the chunky square look of some other wellness trackers
I also found that the touchscreen didn’t always easily respond to my commands, particularly when getting the screen to turn on. The lack of buttons means that it’s not ideal during sweaty work-out times, when touchscreens don’t tend to perform as well.
However, perhaps I’m biased in that I never got the hang of at the wrist flicking action required to turn the screen on automatically. I’ve been looking pretty ridiculous at the gym, swinging my arm up to look at my wrist in increasingly dramatic motions.
So, should you trade in your old Fitbit for a Fitbit Luxe? It depends on what you value in a fitness tracker. If you’re after all the bells and whistles, you’re better off upgrading to a newer Versa or Charge model.
However, if you don’t mind smaller text and no in-built GPS, then you will be rewarded with a genuinely good-looking wrist accessory, with decent fitness and wellness tracking to match.

With Luxe, you’ll get six-months of Fitbit Premium for added support and deeper analysis of your data. Luxe is a beautiful, sleek tracker with a colour touchscreen and up to five days of battery life.

Luxe’s breakthrough design has a soft, gentle shape inspired by the human body that sits lightly on your wrist with a jewellery-like look and feel. Fitbit applied a modern take on traditional jewellery-making techniques using an innovative design process called metal injection moulding to create Luxe’s stainless steel case, providing the warmth expected of handcrafted jewellery, all while delivering a level of precision needed to enable its advanced sensor technology. The result is one of Fitbit’s most fashionable and comfortable devices yet, designed for a diverse range of wrist sizes for 24/7 wear. Fitbit has used a metal vaporizing technique on the soft gold and platinum finishes to provide a truly premium look and feel.
Fitbit partnered with Laguna Beach-based jewellery brand gorjana to further elevate Luxe’s style. The gorjana for Fitbit Luxe Special Edition transforms the tracker into a beautiful piece of jewellery with the Parker Link Bracelet in soft gold stainless steel, and a swimproof classic silicone peony band.
Choose from a wide-range of fashionable and versatile Fitbit accessories, including comfortable classic silicone, premium Horween leather double wrap, woven, stainless steel mesh bands. Or go even further with the gorjana Parker Link Bracelet in platinum and soft gold stainless steel.
With a sleek buttonless design, Luxe is Fitbit’s thinnest touchscreen tracker to-date, with a variety of vibrant new clock faces on the first Fitbit tracker with a colour screen. ]]>COVID-19 might seem unstoppable, but that won’t keep tech from trying. As such an Elarm trial is kicking off in Auckland, in conjunction with the Ministry of Health.
Elarm is an innovative new app that can monitor heart rate data, exercise recovery rates and more, by connecting to wearable devices. The app uses AI technology to inform users of early physiological changes that have been detected through their wearable that might indicate they are becoming unwell, several days before they experience symptoms.
The Ministry of Health have organised a month-long trial of the technology at the border. Up to 500 border workers can volunteer to participate in the trial, which will run until early May.
After installing the app on a smart device, they will receive regular notifications and alerts throughout the day and can securely view their own health information on the app. N.b. Elarm establishes a personalised health baseline for each user based on their wearable data history, all data used by the app is entirely private to the individual participants, which is a fundamental part of Elarm’s privacy by design principles.
As part of the trial, Fitbit are providing 120+ Fitbit Inspire HRS to front line Border Control workers in Auckland. Datamine, the New Zealand company which developed the Elarm app, will provide wearable devices for any border workers taking part who do not have a wearable device.
The trial will determine whether wearable tracking devices might be able to help unite against Covid-19.
The development is one that Fitbit is very proud to be a part of, after already taking a significant role in the research of wearables in the fight against the virus since March 2020. Fitbit is currently collaborating with The Scripps Research Institute and Stanford Medicine, looking at using Fitbit data to help detect and track diseases.
The consortium research promotes shared learning and development, and is being supported by Fitbit and Fitbit users in various ways. Fitbit users can easily access information on how to participate in these studies through the developed COVID-19 Resource tab within the Fitbit mobile app, which also features tools and content to help users stay healthy, safe, and happy at home. Users also can virtually connect with a doctor directly from the Fitbit app via telemedicine provider PlushCare and stay up to date on the latest information with easy access to real-time updates from the World Health Organization.
The Ministry of Health press release can be found here. Let me know if you require any other information and we’ll try to facilitate this.
