Street Power Football Review

When I saw the trailer for Street Power Football I was intrigued.  A silly fun football game that isn’t as imposing as the long running PES or FIFA games seems like something I need in my life.  What I got was a kinda OK football game that is certainly fun….at times.

The Street has Power

Street Power Football has four main modes, and the most footbally of them is Street Power matches. This lets you have 1-3 players on a team and you play football. There is a steal button, trick button, and shoot button.  Aside from curved shots on goal, it’s that easy.

Power ups appear on the concrete pitch, and you build up a power meter so you can use superpower attacks, but neither of those I was that fond of.  The gameplay is also a little buggy and winds up with button mashing to steal the ball which isn’t the biggest deal.

Street Power is where I spent the majority of my time playing the game as it is simple and fun.

Cage the Panna

Panna is an interesting take on football. Basically you score points by nutmegging your opponents. This has been recreated in the Panna mode with cool looking cages. You get one point for a goal and three for a panna.

To kick off a panna you need a full power gauge and if you have the ball you do essentially a small QTE. The defender does the same and the most right ends the confrontation. Winning as a defensive player gives you possession of the ball, winning as the attacking player nets you those sweet points.

This was cool at first, but it does get old and repetitive fast.

Ain’t no shot like a Trick Shot

Trick Shot mode is probably the one with the most time value. Basically you get plopped into an area, and you need to either hit, or get the ball in, targets. You choose the height, direction, curve, and power of a shot.

Hitting a target after the ball bounces off something or with a curved shot nets more points, and you face a few targets before moving to the next few targets. It’s basically a simple physics puzzle game, and it’s fun as hell. A timer counting down adds a little pressure to the challenge but ultimately it’s a bit of fun.

I got Dancing in my Football

Freestyle mode was my least favourite. Basically your player stands in the middle of the screen and you kick off a rhythm challenge. You do combinations of button prompts to make the player do tricks. Keep the rhythm up and go for longer, fall out of timing and it stops.

At no point in learning the mode, practising the mode, or challenges in the mode, did I think I was having a good time.

Football Kingz

The Become Street King mode has you playing through a campaign of sorts. Basically you need to complete a rotating roster of the above modes with specific challenges. It initially works as a tutorial, but progressively gets harder as you need to complete tricks with x number of points and x number  of bounces, or things like that.

I had high hopes for Street Power Football, and they one mode met the hopes. The game basically winds up being four football minigames, and it does an OK job of that. Ultimately as a package, OK is all it achieves.
